So it is now official...pending Board of Governors approval which is a formality. The Atlanta Thrashers no longer exist...they are now based out of friendly Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg has NHL hockey once again...team has no name yet...season tickets go on sale next Saturday, June 4...prices look decent...$129 for most expensive ticket...$39 for cheapest!
The team will stay in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division for the upcoming season which means lots of travel...because their division rivals are Carolina, Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay! They will be the only team this season in the East not in the Eastern timezone!
MTS Centre in Winnipeg is a small rink and not ideal for expanding. You'll hear "The Drive for 13,000" a lot over the next little while...basically the season ticket base they will need to survive!
Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the NHL, didn't look very happy today making the announcement. His tone when delivering the news was like..."you had a team once before...you got a second chance...don't &*^% it up again!"
So lets see if this is a permanent thing or just an experiment. I think it's up to the fans in Winnipeg to support this team because in today's NHL, what's here today can quickly be gone tomorrow!

All I Want Is A New Phone
So I have a pretty good deal with my wireless carrier with a plan with all the bells and whitstles...didn't have to pay anything for my phone up front...tons of extras...but that was negotiated almost 3 years ago and quite literally I have been paying for it ever since.
You see about a year and a half ago, I started having problems with my smartphone...the battery wasn't holding a charge...the screen developed these weird black lines across it, etc. As well, the technology had sped up so much from the time I got my phone, what I had was almost obsolete. But I did sign a 3 year contract.
In getting such a good deal up front, I was persistent with my carrier and leveraged my loyalty to this brand and the number of separate cell phone accounts I have with them. For a long time, that worked in my favour and even allowed me to upgrade and get out of longer term contracts early without penalty!
So this time around, when I tried my best to get a new smartphone and keep my existing plan, I had no luck! And I have been fighting this battle with my carrier ever since. In the interim, I still have the same phone...got a new battery cheap and it cost barely nothing to fix the screen. However, now it is principal and an example of what some of these big phone carriers try to do to their customers.
I've been in constant contact with the carrier now for the last year and a half and am slowly beginning to break them down. At the same time, my contract is almost up giving me more leverage come the summer when I am free to go to any of the other carriers out there!
I could write a book about this situation...but to sum things up...even once my contract ends, it will cost me a lot more monthly to have a cell phone...which should not be the case. So I continue my battles and will bring you all up to date as we get closer to contract expiry date!

Wish Every Weekend Was a Long Weekend
Back to the daily grind today (May 24) after a nice extended 3-day "long weekend" here in Canada!
Yesterday, Monday May 23, was Victoria Day. It is a day off across the country not only to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria (who's birthday always seems to fall on a Monday but a different date each year) but to participate in the lighting of fireworks!
Next weekend is a long weekend for our friends in the U.S...Memorial Day. Now they have something to look forward to!

NHL Playoffs--The Conference Finals!
So there are 4 teams left...are they the teams you expected to be the final four?
The Eastern Conference final is all tied up now at 1-1. These first 2 games were both played in Boston and I think that it was predictable that both of these teams head to Tampa Bay with a series split!
The Tampa Bay Lightning were definitely the stronger team back in Game 1 this past Saturday. The Boston Bruins turned on the jets last night with a barrage of scoring including 2 from #2 overall rookie draft pick this season, Tyler Seguin (who should have been a Maple Leaf).
Later tonight, the Vancouver Canucks once again host the San Jose Sharks in Game 2 of the Western Conference final series. The Canucks lead 1-0 and the series heads back to San Jose for Game 3.
Is this the year for the Sharks. It might be the last year their big 3 remain intact...Thornton, Marleau and Heatly...on paper a potent line...but history has shown that they disappear come playoff time...and even with all the young guns on the roster, it will be these guys that get San Jose to the Stanley Cup Finals.
It appears Vancouver has the right pieces from scoring to defense to aggressive play right through to goaltending. They gave their fans a scare early almost being knocked out by the Blackhawks in the first round after having a 3-0 lead. But since then, they have seemed to find there footing and are proving they are worthy of being part of the top 4 teams remaining in these playoffs!
As May becomes June and we find out who are the two teams fighting for Lord Stanley's cup this season, we've still got lots of exciting hockey to look forward to!

DJ Joe D Meets One of His Childhood Heroes
Almost every Canadian around on September 28, 1972, regardless of their age at the time, remembers where they were the moment Paul Henderson scored "the goal" with 34 seconds left to pull out a victory for Team Canada against the Soviets in the famous Summit Series.
Obviously most were watching the game unfold anywhere they could find a television set...including my elementary school self who was watching the game with the rest of the students at my school.
There is a famous picture of Henderson celebrating the goal literally seconds after he scored it. I recently found my copy of that picture that I had proudly taped on my bedroom door for many years and has actually survived the last 39 years or so...although not in pristine condition!
I mention this because earlier today I took the picture with me when I went to meet Paul Henderson as part of the Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour. It is a travelling display which prominently features Henderson's hockey jersey that he wore when he scored the goal. After the game, he gave the jersey to a Team Canada trainer...and last year it was sold on auction for $1.3 million ($CAD)!
So now the jersey, with Henderson goes on tour across Canada. So I went with my son to see the jersey, the exhibit and Paul. He signed my picture...I got a chance to talk him briefly, my son and I looked at the full exhibit including the jersey, signed the guestbook and of course, we got to pose for a photo with him:

In speaking with him, I asked him what was the most unique question he has been asked ever since he scored the goal...and he has literally been asked tons of questions.
He replied that someone asked what would have happened if the score of that famous Game 8 remained tied...who would have won the tournament? According to international rules at the time...the tourny winner would have most likely been decided on total goals, which the Soviets had more of!
Given some of the international political undertones the series represented at the time...this would have been a very interesting set of events if that occurred!
I also found quite fascinating what Henderson told me about the actual jersey. The Team Canada jerseys were all 100% cotton and they simply did not allow for heat to escape and Paul said he was actually too hot wearing the jersey. So he actually cut off some of the sleeve on both arms to allow for comfort!
It was a fun few minutes and I have now met another of my many childhood heroes!

Gas Prices in GTA to go up 6.5 cents/litre at midnight tonight (May 9)
Just late last week...commodities on worldwide markets, including oil, took a hit on the stock markets. This resulted in the price of gas going down at stations in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).
The two decreases last week were welcome as prices were just shy of $1.39 a litre...an all-time high price in this area. However, between the two decreases, the price only went as low as ~$1.33 per litre and it took two reductions for that low to be reached.
Fast forward to today...the ever volatile commodities trading on those same worldwide markets saw a sharp increase in just one single day...again including oil futures.
As a result, consumers here in the GTA will be treated to a 6.5 cent/litre increase as of midnight tonight. So now we will be back up shy of $1.40 per litre...all in one day.
I don't necessarily need to go on about how the oil companies in Canada manage the price of gas...but this is absolutely crazy and somebody needs to do something about allowing increases of this size to happen when you never ever get similar sized decreases in the price when the opposite effect occurs.
And yet, we will not abandon our cars and, as Canadians, will simply accept this practice.
Any opinions...leave them in the comments section!
Update: May 10..5:00PM EDT--just got word that effective midnight tonight, gas prices in the GTA are going up another 1.5 cents/litre...8 cents in the last two days! Outrageous!
Update: May 11..5:00PM EDT--somebody is listening or this is a major PR move...effective midnight tonight (May 11), gas prices for regular in the GTA go down a whopping 6.2 cents/litre--though the gas companies still squeezed over 1 cent per litre increase in relation to the price at the beginning of the week...so the strategy appears to be raise by a lot...lower by not as much...then nobody notices the extra cash and thinks they are getting a "bargain!"
Update: May 13...4:00PM EDT---so last night at midnight there was another small decrease of just over 1 cent per litre in the price of gas in the GTA. So the price now sits today below the price at the beginning of the week, but just barely...in the next few minutes we will hear the official price for the weekend...will it go back up just in time for that...I'll keep you posted!

State of the World Right Now!
As I sit here trying to put together an intelligent blog entry...I am suddenly hit by all the things that have happened since this past Sunday...almost half a week ago...today is also May 4...it's been incredibly busy in the real world and the world of DJ Joe D...here are some highlights:
- The world is apparently a safer place now!
- Is Canada any safer with the election of a Conservative majority government and the NDP becoming the official opposition?
- We look forward to another season of Vaughan Rangers Select Hockey starting in September! New jerseys with the new logo this season
- One of the new NDP federal MPs elected in the province of Quebec spent the last week of the election campaign in Las Vegas, doesn't speak any French representing an all-French riding and now some of her paperwork to become a candidate is being scrutinized--Refer to point 2 above!
- Today there is sunshine!
- SiriusXM changed all their channel locations today--luckily all my radios and presets automatically set themselves up with the revised locations
- The NDP also had the youngest ever MP elected in Canada back on Election Day on Monday...19 years old and still in university...again refer to point 2 above!
- Some more people answer the Big Quiz #2...still time to participate...look for the blog entry in the archives!

All is said and done with the 2011 Canadian Federal Election:
- Conservatives have won a majority mandate
- NDP are the official opposition winning just over 100 seats in the House of Commons--historic
- Liberals lost many seats including many of those in Toronto where they had dominated, including the seat of their leader, Michael Ignatieff
- The Quebec-based BQ party was also decimated--their leader did not win his seat back and he also resigned
- The federal Green Party won their first seat ever
