Short entry today...the following list of songs that many people can easily recall and remember as being big hits, classics no doubt, never ever made it to the top of the charts!
That is the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart, the primary source for tracking weekly popular music rankings since the 1950's. For a number of reasons, the highest chart positions any of these songs ever achieved on this chart was number 2! In other countries, these songs may have even topped the charts, but never in the USA!

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road--Elton John (December 8, 1973)
In 2008, Ben & Jerry's created a flavour of ice cream in honour of Elton John, "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road"
Tears In Heaven--Eric Clapton (March 28, 1992)
This song won Grammy Awards in 1993 for Song of The Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year
Electric Avenue--Eddy Grant (July 2, 1985)
The highest charting hit Eddy Grant every had internationally
Material Girl--Madonna (March 23, 1985)
Her nicknanme of many years, the "Material Girl" resulted from this song and associated video, which includes a re-creation of a scene from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" with Marilyn Monroe
Girls Just Want to Have Fun--Cyndi Lauper (March 10, 1984)
This was Lauper's first single as a solo artist; the video won the first ever "Best Female Video" award at the 1984 MTV Video Awards
