Sports Nirvana for the North American Sports Fan

As heard on "The DJ Joe D Show" on Sunday October 17, 2010:

In less than 2 weeks, it will be Sports Nirvana for North American sports fans!

At this juncture in the calendar, it is the only time during the year that all 4 of what are considered as the major North American Sports leagues will all be in action at once!

The NBA (National Basketball Association) begins its regular season officially Oct 26.

The following day, the first game of the World Series, the overall championship series in MLB (Major League Baseball) begins.

The NFL (National Football League) continues well into its the regular season while the NHL (National Hockey League) will have almost completed the first month its regular season.

Here are some quick facts about these interesting set of circumstances:

  • Typically major cities would have 1 to 4 teams representing them; that is 1 franchise per sport

  • This includes cities such as Philidelphia and Dallas who may actually have all 4 of their teams playing at this time if these two cities' baseball teams meet each other in the World Series

  • Cities such as Toronto and Pittsburgh only have one franchise each representing 3 of the 4 of these major leagues; Toronto does not have a NFL Team and Pittsburgh does not have a NBA team

  • And some cities only have franchises in 1 of the 4 major sports leagues; for example:  Montreal only has a NHL team, while Jacksonville, Florida has only a NFL franchise

  • New York City, has a total of  9 franchise spread amongst all 4 of  the major leagues; 2 in each MLB (Yankees & Mets), NBA (Knicks & NJ Nets), NFL (Giants & Jets), and 3 in hockey (Rangers, Islanders and NJ Devils); technically, if the MLB Yankees are in the World Series, all NYC teams would be playing now with the exception of the NY Mets of MLB

  • The next biggest North American city is Los Angeles which has 6 teams representing only 3 of the 4 major sports.  They have 2 teams each in the NHL (Kings & Anaheim Ducks), NBA (Lakers & Clippers) and MLB (Dodgers & Angels) but amazingly have no NFL franchises; at one time, not so long ago they had 2!

Regardless, sports fans, ensure the batteries on your TV remote controls are fresh…this is going to be a busy time for channel surfing!
