This is Canada in the wintertime?

Yes, we are right in the middle of winter in Canada...which means...cold & snow!

A potetial major snowstorm is being forecast for the Toronto area by mid-week.  Although it anticipated to bring with it the largest amount of snow seen in this area this winter (approximately 30cm or almost a foot of snow), the media in Canada's largest city is making this out to be the end of civilization when it comes!

It has been a crazy winter and our friends on the East coasts of both Canada & the U.S. have had multiple snow storms this winter that have met or exceeded the 30cm amount.  While Toronto is usually spared the "huge" storms...we are part of Canada and these do happen.

Over the last 15 years or so, it appears we have forgotten this, with one notable example being a big blizzard over 12 years ago where the mayor of the city had to call in the armed forces to "dig" the city out.  The rest of the country will never let us live that one down!

Anyway, here is a selection of quotes from various news source about the impending storm in Toronto.  no where else in the country will a snowstorm get this type of coverage...2+ days before it even happens!

Remember folks...this is only about one foot of snow in a Canadian city in the wintertime...however, these stories read like we are about to deal with some other major catastrophe. Snow does melt!

"Snowpocalypse, Snowmageddon, Snowtastrophe, Snowtorious B.I.G., The Blizzard of Oz, Shovelmania, snownado and snoprah""Ready the shovels and snowblowers: parts of southern Ontario are preparing for their biggest snowstorm of the season."

"Wild weather” is headed to Toronto in the form of the worst snowstorm in at least two years"

"This will be the first Major winter storm of the season for the Toronto area, and the most significant storm of the season for many regions outside the traditional snow belts"

"Drivers may want to avoid the roads Wednesday, as the city is expected to be walloped by up to 30 cm of snow before the morning commute."

"Environment Canada has upgraded the special weather statement to a winter storm watch Tuesday night and Wednesday."

You heard me mention on the air today (Jan. 30) while introducing this week's Novelty Song of the Week, Life is a Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) by Reunion, that I wanted to you compile your listing of up to 10 "pop culture" references heard in the song (pop culture for 1974).

There are over 100 references in the song and I gave you a couple during the intro.  If you are up to the challenge, leave your listing in the comments section.  I will read out some of the best live on next week's DJ Joe D Show!

Answers to the Big Quiz!

As promised, here are the answers to the first Big Quiz here on the DJ Joe D Blog.

For the last 2 weeks or so, you have had the opportunity to provide answers to the request of naming the home facility of each team in the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB.  Thank you all for participating.

All the answers can be found at this link here:
http://www.4shared.com/document/OT_klqR7/Answers_to_Big_Quiz_1.html

From here, look for the big blue "Download Now" button on the page and click on it

Since this is a free site, a countdown timer will appear before the download will begin---wait for all the time to countdown and then wait for the actual download link to appear--in big letters--Download File Now--click on that link...choose your download location and the download will begin

This was not an easy task...especially with the ever-changing names of these facilities with all the different corporate sponsors, etc.  In the NBA, you might have been tricked up a little bit by the fact the the Miami Heat play out of the American Airlines Arena, while the Dallas Mavericks call the American Airlines Center home (so do the Dallas Stars of the NHL)!

Keep checking back to the blog for more Big Quizzes in the future!

Will Ferrell will join NBC's The Office later this season.

Fans of NBC's long running series, The Office, know by now that star Steve Carell (Regional Manager Michael Scott) is leaving the show at the end of this season.

Reports have indicated that Carell is leaving the series a number of episodes before the end of this season to allow the show to turn its focus to finding Michael Scott's replacement as the plot has that character leaving Scranton's Dunder-Mifflin/Sabre branch as part of the storyline.

The last 4 shows of this season will start to develop the "post-Michael Scott" era on the long running series that will carry into next season and subsequent seasons as well!  These shows will have the branch begin a search for a "qualified" internal or external candidate to fill the regional manager role.

The character being played by Will Ferrell in these episodes with be an "interim" manager who will stick around until a permanent replacement is found!  Early reports indicate that Ferrell's character might even be more inappropriate than Michael Scott...can't wait to see how they play this one out!

Note:
Ricky Gervais, who played boss David Bent in the original U.K. version of The Office is making a cameo appearance on tonight's episode of the NBC's The Office (January 27).

A couple of recent Viral Videos

Here is a roundup of some of the more notable viral videos making the rounds not only on the internet but on all those TV news shows who think they are showing you exclusive video!

This is just from yesterday...singer Jimmy Buffett taking one too many steps at a concert in Australia and falling off the stage (he is ok):

This one is from last week---a lady a little too involved in her texting falls right into a mall fountain (she is now suing the mall!):

This was also from last week after an ice storm hit Pittsburgh, PA and resulted in a multi-car crash fest down the notoriously hilly city roads:

Enjoy!

Name the Famous Person before he became Famous!

Take a quick look at the guy on the left in the picture below.  In the picture, he was one half of the obscure 1980's New Wave/Alternative British duo of Seona Dancing.

This mod-looking group did not have any notable songs heard anywhere in North America at any time...however they apparently charted a song in the Philippines back in 1984!

Needless to say...the glam-looking chap on the left is famous today...he is better known as a comedian, more recently making headlines for some controversial jokes he made only a couple of weeks ago.  Guess who?

Ricky Gervais as part of the pop band Seona Dancing in 1984.

Ok...time's up...the man on the left is none other than comedian Ricky Gervais, popular comedian, tv & movie star (U.K.-based The Office series, Extras, The Invention of Lying, etc.) and only a couple of weeks ago, the host of the Golden Globes awards presentation show, where his jokes have ignited a controversy around whether or not they were appropriate or just plain nasty!

The End of the Month hasn't been kind to the Toronto Maple Leafs

With the NHL All Star Game happening this upcoming Sunday (January 30), tonight (January 25), in Tampa,  is the last game of the month of January for the Toronto Maple Leafs!

Informally, I have been tracking the Leafs' results for the last three games of each month of this 2010/2011 season...it does not look good for Leafs' fans...including this month; they have not had a winning record in the last 3 games of any month this year:

October:
Win against Florida, Shutout losses to both Boston and the New York Rangers

November:
Losses against Ottawa, Buffalo & the Tampa Bay Lightning

December:
Win vs. New Jersey Devils; Losses against Carolina & Columbus Blue Jackets

January:
Losses to Washington & Carolina; awaiting results of tonight's game vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

As I noted earlier, this is very informal, but does clearly show the pattern the Leafs have put together in terms of continuing to string along a lot of losses and not enough wins; a similar pattern found over the previous 5 seasons as well!

Along with the posting "Fun With Numbers" from back on January 20, many of you sports stats fanatics can have a lot of fun coming up with some rationale behind why the Leafs continue to perform poorly year after year despite being the most financially sound and successful franchise in the NHL.

And as fans, we continue to come back to the games even though we know the results over 2/3 of the time...especially at the end of the month!

Update-January 25-10:10PM Eastern
January has now become another month where the Leafs have gone 0-3 in the last three games of the month...just lost to Tampa Bay, 2-0!

These Songs Only Made it to #2!

Short entry today...the following list of songs that many people can easily recall and remember as being big hits, classics no doubt, never ever made it to the top of the charts!

That is the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart, the primary source for tracking weekly popular music rankings since the 1950's.  For a number of reasons, the highest chart positions any of these songs ever achieved on this chart was number 2!  In other countries, these songs may have even topped the charts, but never in the USA!

Below are a selected few songs that have had this distinction. There are many more, but these songs are some of the more surprising that never hit #1 and worthy of being included here!

You will see the title of the song, the artist, the Billboard Chart date the song first reached the number 2 postion on the charts and and interesting fact about each:

Start Me Up--The Rolling Stones (October 31, 1981)
Has been often used to open the Rolling Stones' live shows

Manic Monday--The Bangles (April 19, 1986)
Written for The Bangles by Prince; whose own #1 hit Kiss prevented this song from becoming #1 at the time

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road--Elton John (December 8, 1973)
In 2008, Ben & Jerry's created a flavour of ice cream in honour of Elton John, "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road"

Tears In Heaven--Eric Clapton (March 28, 1992)
This song won Grammy Awards in 1993 for Song of The Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year

Electric Avenue--Eddy Grant (July 2, 1985)
The highest charting hit Eddy Grant every had internationally

Material Girl--Madonna (March 23, 1985)
Her nicknanme of many years, the "Material Girl" resulted from this song and associated video, which includes a re-creation of a scene from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" with Marilyn Monroe

Girls Just Want to Have Fun--Cyndi Lauper (March 10, 1984)
This was Lauper's first single as a solo artist; the video won the first ever "Best Female Video" award at the 1984 MTV Video Awards

Quick Toronto Sports News Update

All the following has happened in the Toronto sporting world in the past 24 hours:
  • Toronto Maple Leafs won a game Thursday evening (against Anaheim Ducks)
  • Toronto Blue Jays traded an inconsistent but notable player, outfielder Vernon Wells, to the Anaheim Angels (no Anaheim conspiracies here).  In return they received catcher Mike Napoli & outfielder Juan Rivera
  • It has been confirmed that TSN (Canadian Cable TV Sports Network) will be starting a nationwide radio network later this year with the 1050 AM dial position becoming the flagship station of the network.  This radio frequency was considered "heritage" in Toronto (former home of 1050 CHUM, at one time the biggest rock station in Canada) before being relegated to simulcasting the audio of a sister local cable news channel!
Now back to regular programming!

Let's Try It Again!

At this point in the week, I thought I would find thousands of answers in the Comments section of the blog entry from earlier this week, "The Big Quiz--Name the Home Sports Facilities of your favourite Pro Teams!"

To date, only 2 replies have been provided!

I promised I would update today on the answers given so far in the quiz...but I am also going to ask all of you again to participate!  So I am extending the date to participate until next Friday, January 28.

The quiz involves naming the rinks, arenas, stadiums, etc. where each of the teams in the "Big Four" major league sport leagues in Canada & the U.S.A calls home. Big Four leagues are NFL Football, MLB Baseball, NHL Hockey & NBA Basketball.

So I am looking for: the name of the league (NBA, NHL, MLB or NFL), the city, the team name (some cities have more than one team in the same league) and the full name their home facility (you can add any nicknames too).

Leave your answers in the Comments section.

Since you are leaving the answers in the Comments section and many others can see what has already been posted...this is a "cooperative quiz"; you may be able to "fill in the blanks" for some answers missing.

To help you out, here is how many facilities you need to name for each of the 4 leagues:

NFL: 31 (two teams share the same home facility)
MLB: 30
NBA: 29 (two teams share the same home facility)
NHL: 30

The answers provided to date are:

Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) play out of the Air Canada Centre
Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) call the Rogers Centre home

So as you can see, many more answers for you to add!  So have some fun and participate today!

Fun With Numbers

Wanted to show you all a couple of charts showing the record of the Toronto Maple Leafs over the last 5 seasons (not including this season) in comparison with the records of the Stanley Cup winning teams over those 5 seasons

First, here is the Maple Leafs' chart:

And here is the chart showing the regular season stats for the Stanley Cup winning teams those seasons:

I will let all of you sports analysts pick through the more subtle trends that may appear here---I just want to point out that over those 5 seasons, the Leafs never won more games than the lowest amount of wins attributed in one season to a Stanley Cup winning team (the 2008-09 Penguins, who had only 45 wins and changed coaches mid season).

Also remember something historic about the Maple Leafs's franchise...back in the early 80's, owner at the the time, Harold Ballard moved the team into the same divsion as Detroit & Chicago because he believed his team had a better chance of making the playoffs each season if in the "weaker" Western Conference each year (Leafs were moved back to the Eastern Conference back in the early 2000's).

Of the five teams who have won the Stanley Cup in the last 5 seasons, four are from the Western Conference including Detroit & Chicago!

Have fun with these numbers...and you can leave some comments if you want about what you think about the Leafs' troubles in making the playoffs the last 5 seasons (and maybe this season) and if the numbers tell you something!

Funny & Strange iPhone/iPod Touch Apps!

Here are a few iPhone/iPod Touch Apps I have come across recently that I find funny and/or strange.

In my opinion, some seem to have a very questionable or limited purpose; "you really need an app for that???"

The following apps are all real and available for download...some are free and some actually will cost you some dough if you are interested in obtaining them:

Family Quick Sit
Family Quick Sit eliminates the chaos and confusion that takes place in restaurants as groups of families decide who should sit where by assigning strategic seating assignments right on the spot in just a few seconds based on a combination of preconfigured and on-the-spot seating preferences.

"There is no way I am sitting beside Uncle Joe...is there a way to scientifically choose where I should sit instead??"

iWin!
The best and only scratch-off lottery game in the App Store!

So what is it...the best one or the only one?

Power of Cheering
The must-have app for the Alpine Ski World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen! Lets you cheer your country to victory and challenge your friends to a duel! Choose from cowbell, ratchet and bullhorn. The faster and harder you shake your phone, the more you cheer and the better chance you have of winning those precious medals.

Finally the secret to winning it all...not all those years and dollars spent training...it instead has come down to this remarkable app and how fast and hard you shake your phone!

Justin Bieber Countdown To Events Clock
The Justin Bieber Countdown to Events Clock is the ultimate "MUST HAVE" for JB's #1 fans. Use this tool to keep track of up to 5 different events, such as Justin's T.V. appearances, concerts in your area, book signings, etc and the clock will count down the events separately and display the day, hour, and minute still they start with a little surprise in the last minute.

Just replace that old organizer app that tracks reality and instead plan your daily life around the events on the Justin Bieber Countdown to Events Clock!  BTW, there is also a Lady Gaga version available too!

iRoad Signs
iRoad Signs provides an explanation for some of the most important Road Signs in  the USA

Maybe before you get into a automobile to drive it, you should have some basic knowledge of those signs...like that eight-sided red sign with big letters!  Better yet...keep your eyes on the road rather than checking your mobile device to determine what that sign was you crashed into!

AudJob - Audition Assistant
Introducing AudJob - Audition Assistant, the premiere tool for auditioning artists. Manage your audition appointments, industry connections, and professional expenses. AudJob takes care of the business of the business so you can audition famously.

Everything but the talent needed to get the part.  Good Luck!

This is a very short list for you to ponder.  There are many, many more out there!

You can also let us know what funny or strange apps you may have encountered!  Leave the details in the comments section here.

NHL All Star Game Captains chosen today (January 18, 2011)

The NHL 2010/11 All Star Game is being held on January 30 in Raleigh, North Carolina, home of the Carolina Hurricanes!

So it is very nice that one of the two All Star team captains named earlier today is hometown favourite, Eric Staal.  The other captain is veteran Detroit Red Wings defenceman, Nikolas Lidstrom.

This year a new format is being tested for deciding the teams for the game. The eligible all star players were able to choose the two captains.  Prior to game day, the captains themselves will choose their teams from the eligible all-star players.

Sidney Crosby, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who was considered a favourite in being chosen as one of the captains, may not even be playing in this game.

Crosby has been out of the Penguins lineup since earlier this month trying to recover from the effects of a concussion he most likely suffered during the January 1 NHL Winter Classic game.  He played in the next game after that and looked visibly shaken up after receiving another head blow during that game.  He has not played since.

The Big Quiz--Name the Home Sports Facilities of your favourite Pro Teams!

I thought a little quiz would be a fun break as it continues to be cold and snowy in most of the continent! This is not too hard if you are a typical North American sports fan!

The "Big Four" major league sport leagues in Canada & the U.S.A. are: NFL Football, MLB Baseball, NHL Hockey & NBA Basketball.

The quiz involves the rinks, arenas, stadiums, etc. where each of the teams in each league mentioned above calls home.

You have until next Monday (January 24) to complete the quiz. I will compile what is found in the Comment section during the week and provide an update on Friday (January 21) in another blog entry with the correct answers to date!  I will provide all the answers here next Tuesday (January 22)...whether or not we have the all right answers posted!

To help you out, here is how many facilities you need to name for each of the 4 leagues:

NFL:  31 (two teams share the same home facility)
MLB: 30
NBA: 29 (two teams share the same home facility)
NHL: 30

So are you up to the challenge?  Good Luck...Have some fun & thanks for participating!

Maybe they can call it "Tarjay" in Canada??

U.S. discount retailer Target might have to choose between using a different name in Canada, buying the Canadian rights to the Target trademark, or face a lawsuit.

On Thursday, the U.S. retailer said it will spend $1.83 billion to take over the leases for the majority of Zellers stores from its owner, the Hudson's Bay Company.

The chain said it plans to open about 200 Target stores over the next 10 years that would sport its signature red bulls-eye logo.

However, a small Canadian store chain that currently uses the name "Target Apparel" owns the trademark rights to the name in Canada.  Fairweather Ltd. has owned the "Target Apparel" name in Canada for 10 years.

The U.S Target retailer actually filed a challenge with Canada's trademark office back last July, claiming the Fairweather owner hasn't been using the Target name. The Canadian company has since opened stores called "Target Apparel" in two small Canadian cities. Fairweather has until the end of February to prove to that it has used the name in the last three years, or had plans to use it, in order to keep its ownership rights.

Fairweather has lost ownership of the Target trademark back in 2005 after a ruling made by Industry Canada at the time; however, the Federal Court of Appeal later ruled Fairweather's ownership should be reactivated.

The law says company names must be distinct to avoid confusing shoppers, so two companies with similar names would not be allowed.  If the U.S. Target loses the battle, it could offer to buy the name from the Canadian owner.

Crazy Weather!

It is barely mid-January and the North American continent, along with some other notable places around the world, have been smacked by some crazy winter weather over the last couple of months...and winter still has a good 6-8 weeks to go!

Back in early December, parts of the UK and Europe were slammed with major snowfalls...London looked like Buffalo NY, with all the snow they had!  And speaking of Buffalo NY, they got hit big by snow resulting in people being stranded in their cars on I-90 for over a day...on a major highway going through a major city!

Closer to Christmas, once again Europe was hit with snow and freezing temperatures resulting in major airports across the continent having to close.  The Northeastern coast of the U.S. was hit with a major snowstorm around the same time, paralyzing New York City and closing down many airports along the Eastern Seaboard at the height of the holiday travel season!

Fast forward to this past week where it was reported that 49 of the 50 United States has some sort of snowcover (including Hawaii...which had snow reported on its mountains).

More substantial amounts of snow fell in places in the U.S. also not known snowfall...including Atlanta which got a huge dumping of snow putting it's 8 snow plows (that's right only 8 of them) into overdrive---and a couple of those were taken out of commission after they slammed into each other because of the icy road conditions!

Overall, January in most of North America has seen typical amounts of snow and cold temperatures, however after a few mild and less snowy winters the last few years, this seems like a lot more to most people!

Let's hope the last couple of months of winter settles down and things look sunnier and warmer...because it seems you can't even go south to escape the cold this season!

NFL Playoffs--Round 2--Divisional Playoffs

This weekend we are entering Round 2 of the 2010 NFL Season Playoffs...the Divisional Playoff games!

For all fans who like NFL games on Saturday...this weekend we have 2 more games being played that day, January 15 with the other 2 games being played on Sunday January 16.

The Saturday action starts with the AFC Divisional Matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh starting at 4:30PM Eastern.  This looks to be an exciting game matching up 2 AFC North divisional rivals.

The other Saturday game is the first of the NFC Divisional Playoff matches with the Green Bay Packers visiting the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome at 8:30PM Eastern.  Atlanta was seeded No. 1 this year in the NFC playoffs based on their regular season record.

After you all get some rest Saturday night, we have the two matchups on Sunday...starting at 1PM Eastern as the surprising Seattle Seahawks visit the Windy City to meet the Chicago Bears in the NFC game.

The AFC game at 4:30PM Eastern once again matches up 2 divisional rivals, this time from the AFC East as the New York Jets, who won last week's wildcard playoff game with a last second score to beat the Indianapolis Colts by one point, visit the New England Patriots at Foxboro.  Tom Brady vs. Mark Sanchez will certainly show as the marquee game of the day...but with the NFL, it's wait and see if the action matches the hype!

Next week, the winners of all these games meet up on Sunday January 23 to play in their respective Conference Championship playoff games.  Times and locations to be determined after all the games end this weekend.  Stay tuned to the DJ Joe D blog for updates!

Update: January 16:

So the Championship Series are set in both Conferences for next Sunday (January 23).

The early game is the NFC Championship matchup at Soldier Field in Chicago where the Bears host their NFC North division rivals, the Green Bay Packers

Later Sunday evening is the AFC Championship game from Heinz Field in Pittsburgh...the Steelers and the New York Jets.

More about these games later this week!

Hidden Charges

I just heard about an electricity utility in New York State that charges its customer a $1.00 bill fee regardless how they receive their bill (i.e., electronically or paper-based by mail) and how they pay for it (again either electronically or by mail).

This is essentially a fee that customers are charged to actually pay their bills--a spokesperson indicated that this covers off the production and processing of bills.  When customers complained about this fee, they were told by the utility that they have actually already been paying it but it had been hidden somewhere else in the billing breakdown !

This got me thinking about what other types of hidden charges or fees are applied to consumers.  I know, for example, that Canadians who use their credit cards in the U.S. are subject to an additional fee over and above the straight exchange rate.  Many residents of Ontairo, have to pay their local hydro (electricity) utility a fee each bill to cover off the utility's past debts.

There are many more...so I am hoping you can share some with us.  Let your fellow consumers know what they are paying that they probably don't know about...and what they probably shouldn't be paying.  Let's all be consumer advocates today!

As usual, please leave your input in the Comments section of this blog entry.  Thanks!

Toronto Maple Leafs go for 4th win in a row tonight!

You read correctly...if tonight's game (January 11) vs. the San Jose Sharks is won by the Toronto Maple Leafs, they would have put together an unprecendented 4 game win streak...nothing so awsome seen in this part of the world since 200..., maybe 199..., wait...possibly 198...who knows!

The "score for four" started back at home last Thursday (January 6) against the St. Louis Blues in a shootout win 6-5.  The Leafs actually had a healthy lead in that game until St. Louis stormed back to tie it during the 3rd period.  But a win is a win.

On Friday (January 7), at the start of the current Leafs road trip, they thrashed the Atlanta Thrashers 9-3; again, there was some worry about another shootout game as the Leafs lead 9-1 early in the 3rd period in this one and Atlanta scored 2 unanswered goals. However, that lead was safe!

Last night, the Leafs started the West Coast portion of their road trip in Los Angeles, beating up on the Kings with a 3-2 victory.

Tonight, it should continue to be challenging for the Leafs to get 2 points in this game against the Sharks, one of the NHL's premier teams (DJ MSox's favourite). Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and the entire Sharks team will definitely do their best to spoil the Leaf's win streak.

If they win #4...who will be the first media outlet in Toronto to suggest this again:

UPDATE-JANUARY 12: Leafs did win it over the Sharks by the score of 4-2!

Truths For Mature Humans

A friend of the DJ Joe D Show since day one (ok...maybe since day 2 or 3) shared this oddly accurate list with me that I would like to share as today's blog entry:

Truths For Mature Humans
  1.  I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.
  2.  Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.
  3.  I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
  4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
  5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
  6. Was learning cursive really necessary?
  7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of    my neighborhood.
  8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
  9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.
  10. Bad decisions make good stories.
  11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
  12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blu Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.
  13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.
  14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call
  15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
  16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.
  17. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.
  18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger
  19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?
  20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!
  21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.
  22. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.
  23. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time!
  24. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

The Interesting Story of Ted Williams (not the baseball player)

I am sure many of you have heard by now about the homeless Ohio man named Ted Williams who is the world's latest overnight Internet sensation based on a video on You Tube.

The video, taken in December by a reporter for the Columbus Dispatch, shows Williams asking for money at the side of a road.  The angle here is that Williams, a former radio dj/host, is prompt to ask for assistance using his "radio" voice---something most wouldn't have expect to hear out of the mouth of a homeless person begging for money on the street.  The voice sounds like you are listening to him on an easy listening radio station!

Once the video began to be watched by millions on You Tube...offers to Williams for work, shelter, money, etc. began pouring in.  One of the more notable offers was a job as the in-arena announcer for the Cleveland Cavliers NBA basketball team at Quicken Loans Arena.

Through many years of drug and alcohol addiction, Williams eventually became destitute and started living on the streets.  He had been out on the streets so long, he had no formal identification documents in his possession and had been denied boarding on an airplane he was taking to New York to be on NBC's Today show until he was able to quickly obtain his birth certificate from the Ohio state records bureau due to the noteriety of his story.

So now Mr. Williams is well into his 15 minutes of fame...but in this case it's a good thing hopefully because he will be off the streets, gainfully employed and making a positive difference in his life!

Below are two videos...the first is the You Tube video that started it all for Ted Williams:

The second video below is from earlier today (January 6, 2011) when Williams appeared on NBC's Today Show to tell his story:

Roberto Alomar is entering the Baseball Hall of Fame...hopefully representing the Toronto Blue Jays!

I do remember the glory years of the Toronto Blue Jays in the early 1990's.  Two consecutive World Series Championships in 1992 & 1993.  So many memorable plays and names.  However, the name of the player that always stood out for me though was second baseman Roberto (Robbie) Alomar!

Today (January 5, 2011), it was formally announced that Alomar (along with Bert Blyleven) will be the 2011 player inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown N.Y.  On his second year of eligibility for consideration for induction, Robbie received the third highest vote amount in the history of the indication voting process by the Baseball Writers of America!

There are lots of numbers and moments that belong to Robbie Alomar's career...before Toronto he was a draft pick of the San Diego Padres and after Toronto he spent time in both Baltimore & Cleveland; he actually was part of a total of 7 MLB teams during his career, before leaving Major League Baseball after the 2004 season.

But it was his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, coming over to the team in a blockbuster pre-1991 season trade with the Padres, that he will best be remembered for...and the team that he will most likey enter the Hall representing!  It will be the first time a player enters the HOF with a Blue Jays uniform.

I have been a Jays fan since their inception in 1977...they arrived just in time for me entering my teens and through good and bad, I have remained a pretty decent fan.

My teenage son is also a Jays fan even though he was not around to see Alomar in his prime, especially during those 2 World Series winning seasons.  Today, we are both very happy fans to see Robbie enter the Hall...did someone say Cooperstown road trip during this July's inauguration weekend!

Now I have seen everything...

Ok, this entry will be simple...

Tim Horton's, the iconic Canadian donut chain, has introduced a Toronto Maple Leafs themed donut for sale in it's coffee shops in the Greater Toronto Area.

As you can see by the accompanying picture, the sprinkles represent the NHL team's blue and white colour scheme.

My request is to let me and all the blog readers know what you think about this product.  Would you buy it? Will it sell well?  Can you use it as a hockey puck if you let it sit for a few days?

Add your feedback here in the comments section...but at least it's better that a Toronto Maple Leafs themed coffee!

NFL First Round Playoff Matches are Set!

It was a long Sunday yesterday as well as a long regular NFL season in 2010 for DJ Joe D!

I was in a couple of football fantasy pools this season once again, trying to defend the championships won last season in both.  Not even close in either...oh well!  Made the playoffs in the "Family" fantasy league...but left in the dust in the Pick 'em league.  DJ Whitney did well in the Pick 'em league...coming in tied for second...Congrats!

Regardless of whether or not you were in a NFL fantasy league pool this season or just a NFL fan, the first round of this season's NFL Playoffs are set for next week; 2 games next Saturday--January 8 & 2 games on January 9!

The Saturday AFC Conference matchup has the wildcard New York Jets playing against the AFC South Division Winner, the Indianapolis Colts; on Sunday, the other first round AFC matchup has the AFC West Division Winner, the Kansas City Chiefs meeting up with the other AFC wildcard team, the Baltimore Ravens.

The NFC matchups next week look like this: on Saturday, the defending Super Bowl Champs, the New Orleans Saints are the wildcard opponent vs. the NFC West Division Champs, the Seattle Seahawks, who actually won that division with a losing regular season record (7-9)

The Sunday NFC conference playoff game matches the NFC East champs, the Philadelphia Eagles with the other NFC wildcard team, the Green Bay Packers.

The following weekend (January 15 & January 16th) the Divisional Playoffs will take place, where the 2 top seeded teams in each conference take on the winners of this weekend's games depending on the results of the Wild Card games and based on how these teams finished the regular season (Wild Card or Conference Winner team).

In the AFC, the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers are the two top seeded teams who get a bye this week; The NFC teams are Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons.  All these teams have home field next weekend.

Sunday January 23 is the day both conference final games are played; the winners of those games meet up on February 6 in the Superbowl in Dallas.

Got all that?  I will keep you all posted as to progress and results throughout the NFL Playoffs.  You can listen to the DJ Joe D Show over the next few Sundays as Jonah will have much to say about the matchups during his NFL Minute.

Remember, starting this Sunday, January 9, 2011, listen to the DJ Joe D Show on it's new home, The Glow Radio (http://www.theglowradio.com/)

Update: January 9, 2011-4PM Eastern

The AFC Divisional Playoffs are now set--Next Weekend (Jan. 15 & Jan. 16), the New York Giants face the New England Patriots in Foxboro, MA while Baltimore goes to Pittsburgh to meet up with their division rival, the Steelers

Update: January 9, 2011-8:30PM Eastern

The NFC Divisional Playoffs are also set; with Green Bay's victory in Philly earlier, they will be playing the Falcons in Atlanta while Seattle will visit the Windy City next weekend to take on the Chicago Bears.

2011 NHL Winter Classic Finally Played

After a 7 hour delay to the start time of the annual NHL Winter Classic outdoor game, the 2011 version took place at mild and rainy Heinz Field in Pittsburgh last night (January 1, 2011), where the visiting Washington Capitals squeaked out the win over the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1, led by 2 goals by Eric Fehr.

The Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin both did not factor into the scoring leading to the Washington win. The start of the game was pushed back to 8PM EST from the original 1PM EST scheduled start time due to the combination of the mild weather in Pittsburgh and the lingering rain showers--not a typical occurrence in Pittsburgh in January.

At game time, the temperature was the warmest ever recorded for a Winter Classic game in the 4 years since the game has started to become a January 1st annual event. As the game progressed, the temperature did begin to dip and the winds picked up as colder air moved through, but also a little bit of lingering rain showers continued to coat both the outdoor ice surface and all who were out there!

If the game wasn't played last night due to weather, it would have been re-scheduled for today (Sunday), however, organizers did not want that scenario as it would have conflicted with a full slate of NFL games on the final day of the regular season, where there are still some playoff implications to be sorted through.

Worst case scenario would have been if the game couldn't have been played today, it would have had to have been made up as a regular season game, indoors, later in the season.

Regular NHL game rules applied to this game despite it being outdoors.  The only accommodation made that was different from a regular game occurred in the 3rd period, where due to wind conditions, the teams switch sides halfway through the period so one team is not disadvantaged by the winds being against them for the whole period.
