Do You Remember These Ads?

Growing up during the 1970's I was an avid comic book reader.  It didn't matter if it was Superman, Spiderman, Shazam or Archie...there were literally tons of comic books titles in all genres available each month and I did purchase and read so many each month for many years.

The one thing all the comic book genres of the 1970's shared in common were the ads.  There were recognizable whether or not you were reading about battles between Spiderman &; Doc Ock or Betty & Veronica!

I have compiled a few of these ads for your walk down memory lane.  I will try to dig up some more over the next little while as well:

A Big Weekend Coming Up!

As we head toward another spectacular DJ Joe Show, happening live, this Sunday, July 3,starting at 10AM EDT on the Glow Radio (http://www.theglowradio.com/), we are also heading into another holiday weekend here in Canada.

This Friday, July 1st, is Canada Day...the country's birthday celebration (we are 144 years young this year)!

The holiday is celebrated on the actual day of the week it falls on, which this year happens to be a Friday, making this year's celebration a long weekend...yay!

Some Canadians will be fortunate enough to have an opportunity to celebrate with the British royal newlyweds, William & Kate, who start an extended tour of the country in the next couple of days and will be in the capital, Ottawa, on Canada Day for the traditional celebration that happens each year there.

Since the DJ Joe D family has no plans to travel to Ottawa this year, and since the Royals won't be visiting our town of Toronto, we have decided to spend the Canada Day weekend doing other things!

Friday, I will be attending the Toronto Blue Jays game at Rogers Centre to watch the Philadelphia Phillies as interleague play continues in MLB.

This series is technically a re-scheduling of a series against these two teams that was supposed to happen last season in Toronto, but had to be rescheduled to Philadelphia at the last minute because Toronto was hosting the International G20 Conference at the time and the stadium fell right in the zone that was shut down for security reasons.

The series also marks the homecoming of one of the Blue Jays' all time greatest players, Roy Halladay, who was traded to the Phillies before the beginning of last season.  He is scheduled to pitch Saturday...which will make the Rogers Centre a madhouse that day...but for Canada Day, the matchup is fine, there will be crowds...and free t-shirts for the fans!

On Saturday, July 2, we are heading to an area of the city known as The Distillery District (used to be home to the city's many beer/liquor distillery plants back in the day).  The purpose of this visit is to experience the travelling Food Truck tour that will be parking there that day.  According to the information we have been given, a number of different types of Food Truck, serving a variety of unique dishes, can be found...many of them made famous on the Food Network.  We will have a big appetite that day!

Sunday of course is the big live DJ Joe D Show at 10AM EDT on the Glow Radio (replay of last week's show is also on starting at 8AM EDT)!  So wherever you are in the world, try to tune in...and enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Help Me Win a Contest!

I entered the blurb below in a contest on experiences with pesky door-to-door water heater salespeople or representatives sponsored by a local utility.

To win one of the top prizes, the author of the blurb needs to encourage others to come the site where the entries are published and vote for their favourite.

Have a read of mine...if you think it is worthy of your vote, you can find the site at: http://www.ignorethedoor.ca/gallery.  Simply type the name of the blurb: "No Thank You...I'm Trying to Eat" into the search box and you will be given the opportunity to leave your vote!

Vote Early and Vote Often...the contest ends this upcoming Sunday evening by midnight.  Thank you for your support!

No Thank You...I'm Trying to Eat

One evening not so long ago as I was beginning to eat dinner with my family after a particularly long and trying day at work, the doorbell at my front door rings. I got up from the kitchen and went to answer the door.

It was a representative from one of the many door to door water heater sales companies that had recently been around my neighbourhood soliciting their products and services

The gentleman begin his rehersed introduction, speaking quite quickly, almost to ensure he said every word he memorized. Feeling quite hungry and tired, I stopped him as he attempted to begin another long-winded scripted speech..."No, I am not interested!" was my reply.

He ignored me completely and attempted to begin his routine again. Before he could, however, I said to him..."look...why don't you give me your address?" He looked at me puzzled... he replied, "why would I do that?" I looked him straight in the eye and said..."So I can arrange to come to your house sometime during the week and ring your doorbell while you're eating dinner!" And with that, I closed the front door and went back to eat!

Listener Mailbag

With so many listeners from around the world to the DJ Joe D Show (Sundays 8AM to Noon Eastern on The Glow Radio: http://www.theglowradio.com/), I get lots of correspondance, mostly in email form!

Here is just a brief selection (complete with listener photos) of some of the letters I receive almost on a daily basis:

Johnny X. from Wichita, Kansas:

Hey DJ Joe D:  Keep up the good work with the show...and avoid Crazy Gluing your lips to your nose...it hurts!

Fester P. From Dublin, Ireland

Top of the morn' to you DJ Joe D:  Here I am hard at work on a Sunday afternoon here in Dublin...your show comes on here just as I begin to prep for the upcoming week's work.  Everyday is casual around my shop...now what did I do with that sandwich????

Little Donny from Thailand

Hey man...like the music, like the sports...and like those features...any chance you can play a "Light Menthol Cigarette Song of the Week" on you show?

Sugarman Family from Memphis, Tennessee

The Supercuts shop where we get the family haircuts plays your show nice and loud each Sunday when we are in!  Something tells me they are a bit distracted by the show when it gets to be our turn!

So there you have it...a little peek inside the DJ Joe D Show Listener Mailbag!  Who knows...maybe it will be your email that shows up next time I do a blog entry on what mail I receive!

Some Loose Ends

A couple of things you may find interesting:

Check out this commercial for Dirt Devil from somewhere in Europe...only at the end do you find out who the ad was for...very creative:

Dirt Devil-The Exorcist from MrPrice2U on Vimeo.

In the U.S., for those who were original XM subscribers (although technically the entity is now called SiriusXM, each provider still has programing exclusively for it's previous subscribers):

Clear Channel To Simulcast Five FM Stations On XM

Five Clear Channel owned stations will begin simulcasting on XM Radio:

Channel 11 will replace CHR “Kiss” with a simulcast of CHR 102.7 KIIS-FM Los Angeles.

Channel 12 will replace Hot AC “Mix” with a simulcast of CHR “Z100” WHTZ New York.
Channel 13 will replace AAA “Music Summit” with a simulcast of AC “106.7 Lite-FM” WLTW New York.
Channel 57 will replace Country “Nashville” with a simulcast of Country “The Big 98” 97.9 WSIX Nashville.
Channel 163 will replace South Asian “Bollywood And Beyond” with a simulcast of Urban 107.5 WGCI Chicago

This is part of the licensing agreement which gives Clear Channel the right to program a portion of XM’s bandwidth.

One more video...remember all the fun people were having mixing Mentos with Diet Coke?  Well here is one guy who really didn't have a lot of fun with this combination!

What's a Mail Strike?

The union representing Canada Post letter carriers and inside postal workers has started a series of rotating strikes, shutting down postal services in a different Canadian city or region for 24 hours at a time.

They are in a legal strike position and continue to negotiate with management...but they haven't completely shut down the postal system across the country yet.

The media declares that if these guys go on strike, it won't be as detrimental to Canadians as past Canada Post strikes were simply because they is a decline in actual use of these service by people.  In 2011, the postal system doesn't play as significant a role in the day to day life of Canadians as it did, say, 20 years ago.

Here is a brief list of what Canadians needed Canada Post for back in 1991 that in 2011 they have alternatives to:

  • Package Delivery (couriers are an option)
  • Music (remember the Columbia Record, Tape and CD Club?)
  • Magazine subscriptions (can get them online now)
  • The many bill sent and paid each month (both processes can be done exclusively online now)
  • Any sort of payment (today it's a simple direct deposit)
  • Personal mail (e-mail)
There is probably much more I could add to this list!  Feel free to do so via the comments section!

Grand Rapids LipDub

The video below has of course gone viral in a big way.  A local resident with some know-how and internet saavy took it upon himself to show America and the world that his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan was not a "dying city," but one full of proud people willing to show their civic pride to the world.

Rob Bliss is a 22-year-old Internet whiz who created a nine-minute, single-shot movie, set to a live audio recording of Don McLean performing his 1971-72 hit “American Pie,” and involving as many as 3,000 Grand Rapidians singing along and taking part in a constantly shifting series of 26 scenarios, all of them written, choreographed and directed by Bliss

Rehearsed in segments for a week in advance, and shot over four hours on a Sunday afternoon — city authorities shut down the city core so that Bliss’s enormous cast and ATV-enabled camera crew could complete five full “takes,” only one of which actually reached completion — the video took six months to organize

Renowned movie critic Roger Ebert calls it “the best music video ever made"

The $40,000 budget was raised from sponsorships by local and regional businesses.

Bliss said he chose “American Pie” because “it’s inspiring, and there are words within the lyrics that lend themselves to interpretation. “It’s the right length for a lipdub, and the live version has the audience singing along, which suited our purposes perfectly.

Take a look and judge for yourself.
