Did you know...
Did you know that...all still photography cameras once needed film to allow pictures to be taken???
And that once the photo was taken, the film in the camera would need to be "developed" in order to see the actual pictures taken???
Leading up to today (December 30, 2010), the slow demise of film for cameras was inevitable! Today marked the end of the line for anyone in the world who had a roll of Kodachrome film to be developed as the last film processing machine that had to capability to develop that brand of film was officially unplugged for good in Kansas.
The actual Kodachrome film itself had not been made by Kodak since mid-2009. At one time, it was the world's most popular camera film, even being iconically documented by Paul Simon in his 1973 hit song of the same name!
Unless you purchase a "one-time use" camera, almost all of the consumer-based cameras today take digital pictures, obviously not requiring a visit to the photo lab to develop the pictures (however, many still flock to photo labs to have them print their digital photos).

Hello Coffee Lovers...Tassimo vs. Keurig
A lot of you may have received one of these single-cup "intelligent" coffee/beverage makers over the holidays as a present or bought one for yourself. The DJ Joe D family ended up picking up the Tassimo model and we love it! Many people ask what are some of the notable differences between the 2 units and which one would be better for them?
I am taking some information from the following article: "Tassimo Brewer vs. Keurig Brewing System: Which is the better single cup coffee machine?" You can find the full article at this link: http://hubpages.com/hub/Tassimo-Brewer-vs-Keurig
Both rely on a microprocessor to brew the "perfect cup of coffee!" The Tassimo has the edge here because, as it's advertising tagline indicates, "it is the barcode that makes the difference!"
Indeed, the barcode technology used in the Tassimo is able to tell what you're brewing and it automatically adjusts brew volume, temperature, pump drives and brew cycle to give you the best brewing experience for the particular "T-Disc" product you're brewing.
In Canada, the T-Disc selection of coffee, teas, espresso, cappuccino, latte and hot chocolate appears to be limited to Starbucks, Maxwell House, Nabob, Twinnings and Suchards products. In the U.S., I have also seen Tazo Teas and Seattle's Best Coffee!
The Keurig "K-Cup" is a simple, easy-to-use cup that you just pop into the Keurig brewer. Inside this little cup is not only the coffee, but also a drip-style filter. The cup helps to protect the coffee from moisture, light and oxygen. However, the Keurig does not make the specialty coffees/drinks that the Tassimo does.
Keurig has pursued a licensing structure for its coffee, meaning that it licenses this technology to coffee companies, who then create the K-Cups. There are currently more than 200 varieties of coffees and teas available in K-Cup form.
Both of these systems operate in a similar way. Both of them require you to open the brew-head to place in the disc or cup.
For usability, Keurig is the easiest. Simply put the K-Cup in your Keurig coffee maker and press the button. Your only choice is brew volume, which is how you can adjust the strength of the brew. A 6 oz. brew is going to be stronger than a 10 oz. brew.
Brewing coffee with the Tassimo brewing system is very similar to the Keurig, but it becomes more complicated if you're brewing a cappuccino or latte. First you must insert and brew the espresso T-Disc. Then, you insert and brew either the cappuccino or latte T-Disc
Keurig has a faster brewing cycle than Tassimo: it takes approximately 45 seconds to heat the water and another 15 to send the water through the filter. The Tassimo system takes about 60 seconds to heat up and another 60 seconds to filter the coffee.
Let us know what you think. Do you own one or the other unit or both? Are you thinking about buying one of these products? What are your experiences? Which do you prefer. Just leave some comments here. We are interested in knowing your thoughts!

More of the Same
This week is just to short and too busy for a long-winded blog entry...so here is some more little tidbits for you to digest:
Dexter's Troubles:
Did you know that the actor who plays Dexter on "Dexter", Michael C. Hall, was actually married to the actress, Jennifer Carpenter, who plays his sister on the show?
Don't get too excited about this fact as Carpenter has just filed for divorce from Hall!
Season 5 of Dexter just ended this past Sunday...I guess this is a way to keep it in the news until the show returns 9 months from now!
Phillies Fly:
The Philidelphia Phillies of the National League in Major League Baseball have now wrapped up potentially one of the strongest starting pitching rotations ever with the (re) acquisition of Cliff Lee late yesterday (December 13).
Their top 4 pitchers are bona-fide all stars/past Cy Young Award winners--Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels.
Lee was with the Phillies during the 2009 season...he was sent to Seattle to start the 2010 season, traded to Texas mid season and helped them get into the past season's World Series.
Lee was being aggressively pursued by the bottomless pit of money know as the New York Yankees before the Phillies scooped in to get him for the next 5 years.
A Penny For Your Thoughts:
A Senate committee has recommended that the Canadian penny be eliminated.
The copper one cent piece apparently now costs approximately 1.5 cents each to make. More and more pennies have actually had to be made by the Canadian Mint in the last decade because Canadian are hoarding or saving them rather than using them for cash transactions
This committee sites the countries of New Zealand and Australia as examples of "penniless" economies, as these 2 countries both eliminated the penny from their currencies a number of years ago.

Just Some Quick Stuff Today...
Lots going on today...but I didn't want to dissapoint the millions who follow this blog everyday waiting for the next moment I post something...
Here are a few things that caught my attention today that I will gladly share with you all:
- The tickets for the NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings & New York Giants that is being played tonight (December 13) out of Ford Field in Detroit are all free! This was the game re-scheduled from yesterday that was supposed to be played at the Vikings' home stadium, Mall of America Stadium (aka The Metrodome), however the inflatabile Teflon roof collapsed and ripped under the weight of 17+ inches of snow Saturday evening
- The parent company of the A&P supermarket chain (and other U.S. regional supermarket chains) filed for bankruptcy today. I only mention this because when I was in university many moons ago, I was a part time employee of a local A&P supermarket. So it was a little sad to hear of the situation they are in now. Can you say...cleanup in aisle 3??
- The fantasy NFL football "pick 'em" team I am a part of had its' worst week ever in the 3 seasons we have been in existence. We won only 3 of the 14 games played Sunday...there is still a small chance to redeem ourselves this week with the 2 games being played today. Our goal this season is to win just one week...only 3 more to go!

Snow in Minneapolis means...no Sunday Vikings Game Today!
A double whammy has hit the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota today (December 13)!
Due to a late fall blizzard that hit the city starting Friday evening and into yesterday, over 17 inches of snow was dumped on the Twin Cities area, resulting in a collapse of the inflatable Teflon roof of the Mall of America (aka Metrodome) stadium, home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.
Although officials were confident they could get all the snow removed and the roof "inflated" again in time for today's Vikings game against the visiting New York Giants, unfortunately the game has been officially postponed today by the NFL because the visiting Giants have not yet been able to arrive in Minneapolis!
The blizzard resulted in the travel plans of the Giants being altered slightly; they left New York earlier than usual on Saturday for Minneapolis, but the airport there was closed; they had to land and stay in Kansas City instead where they still are at this moment!
Today's game has been rescheduled for tomorrow evening in Minneapolis. Will this blast of winter weather also affect any of today's NFL matches in other cities across the U.S. Midwest?
UPDATE:
The Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants will play on Monday night at Ford Field in Detroit, home of the Detroit Lions, after the Mall of America's (aka Metrodome) inflated roof collapsed in a snowstorm. The game will kickoff at 7:20 on Monday night, the NFL said.
Officials told the league the roof wouldn’t be ready in time to play Monday or Tuesday
VIDEO:
Here is some cool video of the roof collapsing from the weight of the snow from inside the stadium

I'd Like Some Ice Cream instead with Those Waffles!
An interesting new sports arena trend was born yesterday...waffle throwing from the stands intended for the home team.
After about the umpteenth loss by the Toronto Maple (Syrup) Leafs this season last night (December 9) at home against the Philidelphia Flyers, various home team players began to report waffles being thrown at them by fans (defectors) in the stands at the Air Canada Centre.
And these must have been the homemade variety because there are no vendors at the ACC who sell the dimpled waffle treat!
Players and the media remain puzzled why these disgruntled fans chose waffles to throw. Many of know the tradition in Detroit around throwing raw octopus onto the ice. However, lucky for the Leafs, the waffles were covered in syrup or blueberries or chocolate!

Howard Stern to Stay with Sirius Radio for Another 5 Years
As he announced live on his Sirius Satellite Radio show earlier this morning...the "King of All Media", Howard Stern will be staying 5 more years with the organization. The financial terms of the contract have not been released.
In announcing the news, Stern staged a "fake" announcement that he wasn't coming back resulting in some humorous moments this mornings, especially at the expense of one of his staffers who broke out in tears on the air live before he was told the real news.
Stern came over to Sirius back in 2006 and was paid a reported $500 million for the first five year contract that was to expire at the end of this year.
In the time Stern has been with Sirius, there has been two channels dedicated to his brand on Sirius, a pay-per-view television channel, a merger with XM Radio (the other competing satellite radio outfit which was absorbed by Sirius a couple of years ago) and a growth in listeners/subscribers from reported a 600,000 at the time Stern started on Sirius, to over 20 million subscribers today.
Stern briefly shared with listeners this morning that his new 5 year deal will give him some more flexibility in his schedule. He is currently heard live 4 days a week from 6AM to 11AM on Sirius. His has hinted on air for some time that he wants to reduce his schedule to have time for other things.
As well, he had also been hinting that he wanted to explore other broadcasting options as the landscape has changed over the last 5 years since he started on Sirius.
With the growth of alternate media delivery channels, especially through the internet and a perceived challenge being faced by the satellite radio model, many thought he was going...but other believed he was just posturing and negotiating on air to get the deal he desired.

30 Years Ago Today...December 8, 1980
Popular music fans and the world were shocked to hear the news 30 years ago today...the day John Lennon died.
He was shot outside his apartment complex, The Dakota, in New York City, by a deranged Mark David Chapman. Within hours, he was dead.
The shock of the act, especially given the prominence of John Lennon in popular culture, has had a lasting effect. If he was still alive today...John Lennon would have been 70 years old at this time.
The clip below is from ABC's Monday Night Football telecast from the late evening of December 8, 1980, which was happening live as the news of John Lennon's death started to become public knowledge. Legendary announcer, Howard Cosell is the one who make this announcement on air...
In a strange coincidence, Cosell had briefly interview Lennon on another telecast of Monday Night Football 6 years earlier (in 1974)...
As a tribute to John Lennon, here is one more clip with him singing a version of one of his best known solo songs, "Beautiful Boy":

How do you watch TV?
Most households across Canada and many in the U.S. rely on cable tv or satellite tv services to bring the multi-channel universe of television into their homes. With the explosion of HDTV and even 3D TV technologies, without exception, these services will provide consumers with the most channel selections available.
But cable and satellite tv services come at a price...and for many that price is too much.
Instead, a trend continues to emerge whereby consumers in both countries are dropping cable tv and satellite tv services and opting instead for the old fashion "rabbit ears" and tower antennas for their TV viewing.
Antennas Direct, maker of the new style rabbit ears expects to sell 500,000 this year, up from 385,000 in 2009.The cost is is between $25 and $150 (U.S. Dollars).
Almost all local television stations and major networks broadcast a 100% digital or HDTV signal that can easily be picked up "over the air" with basic antennas now available more readily at retailers. The signal comes in crystal clear, even in large metropolitan areas where in the past, using antennas was not an option (interference from tall buildings, electrical wires, etc.). And best of all...receiving these signals into your home is free!
Digital tv signals, unlike the old analogue ones, tune in 100% without any interference or ghosting. In large metropolitan areas customers can get up to 40 free channels. And the picture signal in many case is superior to what is offered through cable and satellite tv services (those signals tend to be "compressed" to make room for more and more stations...some people can tell the difference).
Opting for antennas does mean many consumers will lose the multitude of specialty television stations offered through cable and satellite tv providers. However, many are willing to go without their HBO or ESPN or TSN to actually be able to afford to watch their fancy HDTV's.
Many are simply finding the content and programming they would be missing on the Internet! The over the air digital spectrum also allows antenna users to pick up "sub-stations" of the main broadcaster...they broadcast a lot of specialty programming. WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, for example, has multiple sub-stations, all broadcasting in digital, and even has one dedicated purely to classic TV sitcoms from the 1950's through to today.
So let us know how you watch TV...do you have cable, or satellite tv or are you a convert back to "rabbit ears?" Or do you watch all your TV through internet sites instead? Leave us some comments...sort of an informal poll! Thanks!

Now You Know What Really Became Of...
The video below has been making the rounds throughout the interwebs.
It is a promotional video for a Norwegian television show, featuring mostly U.S. celebrities who haven't been seen much in public for many years or are typically known as "B" stars; not quite as notable or relevant as their bigger named counterparts (some may be "C" or "D" stars)!
They are singing The Beatles' classic, "Let It Be". The performers are identified in the video, as well, there is also a reference for what each is most "famous" for!
Don't have much more to say about this video. Watch it and let me know, via the Comments section, what you think. How many "stars" do you know or remember?
NOTE: When you click on Play you may be instructed to watch the video at You Tube; simply click on the You Tube link in the player
Here is another star studded video for the show in Norway that supposedly starts the three guys in red sweatshirts--using the actual USA for Africa song, "We Are The World":

Crazy weather in Europe...not so crazy weather in Buffalo!
Guess where this photo was taken:
If you said Buffalo...guess again...it is the streets of London, England just yesterday!
Most of the UK and parts of Europe are currently encountering was has been noted as the earliest ever widespread snow event and cold snap. In some places, temperatures have got as low as minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius during this period.
The snow and cold began to take grip in the UK earlier this week, forcing airport closures in Scotland and Gatwick Airport in London. They have since been re-opened, but numerous other delays and cancellations have been reported across the region for most of the week. This is not a typical weather pattern in the UK for this time or any time of the year.
Now, below is a photo of Buffalo just today...these people are more accustomed to this type of weather:
Although residents of Western New York are always ready for this type of weather in the winter (given their geographic location in relation to Lake Erie, which fuels the "lake-effect" snow machine), today, there have been reports of major closures on the portion New York State Thruway around Buffalo which has resulted in motorists being literally trapped on the highway for many hours.
Here is a photo of sunny Miami Beach, Florida today, just to put things in perspective!

Happy Hanukkah!
Tonight is the first of eight nights which make up the Jewish celebration Hanukkah.
Each night, for the next eight, a successive number of candles are lit on the traditional Hanukkah candle holder, the Menorah.
The eight candles signify the miracle during ancient Jewish times of a tiny amount of oil available to provide a source of light; when lit, it was only supposed to last for one evening but instead continued to provide illumination for a whole eight days.
The Menorah has room for 9 candles in total; typical designs designate the middle candle to be used to light the other candles. Tonight, the first candle is lit, tomorrow evening, 2 candles are lit, etc. until the eighth night when all candles are lit.
Young children also benefit from Hanukkah because they receive a different gift each of the eight days! The celebration is a joyous one where families get together, play games (typically ones involving the dreidel, a multi-sided spinning top made of wood or other materials) and enjoy seasonal food (especially the delicious potato pancake, the Latke)
The timing of Hanukkah and Christmas are usually pretty close each year. This year, Hanukkah is early because this holiday, like all Jewish Holidays, is based on the traditional Hebrew calendar which essentially adds an"extra" month to the Jewish year every other year resulting in the changing dates of these holidays each year when tracked on our regular secular calendars!

Internet Radio Stations I Listen To
I know each and every one of you who have visited the DJ Joe D blog also are weekly listeners to the DJ Joe D Show.
Internet Radio is a relatively new phenomenon although it has evolved over the last 5-7 years into a more sophisticated medium.
Many of you will be used to finding your favourite over-the-air station also broadcasting a stream on the Internet. Over the air stations from all over the world are also a mainstream of Internet Radio.
Internet-only broadcasters are the area of internet radio which has seen the most growth and is also quite exciting. The variety and types of these stations have multiplied in such a short time. Many are run by individuals who started simply with a microphone, some software, access to a on-line server service and ambitious dreams to be heard around the world!
Along with mobile apps dedicated to internet radio broadcasts, specialized radios known as Internet Radios, have given listeners the opportunity to hear the world at their bedside each night! They are essential mini computers that maintain internet radio stations found on multiple databases or websites. You simply add you stations to your own database and like conventional radio, just tune into your favourite one!
Here a few station links you should check out. These represent stations I have been listening to over the last couple of years via the Internet. They represent multiple formats and genres combining both the broadcasts of traditional over-the-air broadcasters with the innovation of those up & coming internet-only broadcast pioneers:
Absolute 80's
http://network.absoluteradio.co.uk/
An over the air station from the UK playing nothing but 1980's music; the mix of North American and UK influences makes for an interesting playlist!
The Glow Radio (theglowradio.com)
http://www.theglowradio.com/
An Internet-only broadcaster out of California, USA which demonstrates the unique mix of musical styles that can be heard on one station alone. Fun DJ's who have a lot of fun with what they do!
JACK FM- Oxford
http://www.jackfm.co.uk/
From Oxford, UK...I enjoy this station because it takes the Jack station format heard in North America and applies it in the UK..."We Play What We Want"...no DJ's; no requests
AudioCream
http://http://www.audiocream.com/
You will find dozens of internet-only music stations here; choose your favourites; it has non-stop music grouped as individual stations by year and decade---from the 60's through to today!
Demented Radio
http://www.dementedradio.com/
Also an internet-only station dedicated to comedy...some live dj's but mostly clips of comedy classics past and present
If you have a favourite Internet Radio station, of any genre or format, share it here with us! We'd like to check out new stations all the time and you would also be sharing them with others from around the world who check out the DJ Joe D Blog on a regular basis!

Are you a Dexter Fan?
The DJ Joe D household is glued to the TV on Sunday evenings watching the always surprising Dexter!
Season 5 is now two shows from ending and there are lots of open doors and potential pitfalls for our title character, Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall.
This season has seen him pick up a partner in crime in Lumen, played by Julia Stiles. His secret double/triple life is also at stake as he is being tracked by a crooked cop, Liddy (portrayed by an almost unrecognizable Peter Weller) and now has got on the wrong side of a popular motivational speaker, Jordan Chase, who is also looking to finish off Dexter in his tracks.
The fifth season started somewhat slow, especially in comparison to the action packed Season 4 which had the Arthur Mitchell serial killer character played superbly by award winning actor John Lithgow. But the last few shows of this season have made up for the slow start with lots of drama and suspense!
What do you think will happen over the next 2 episodes? What have been your favourite moments over the last 5 seasons? If you are a Dexter fan, this is the place to share your thoughts on all things Dexter!
Leave your comments please. I cannot wait to read them all!
Catch Dexter, Season 5...Sundays at 10PM on Showtime (in Canada, The Movie Network-TMN)

Hey, what's going on with my TV????
I noticed a couple of changes on my TV over the last week or so courtesy of Rogers Cable!
Starting last week, they introduced something called AutoHD.
Essentially, if I tune in the actual station on what was the "analogue" or "SD" band of channels previously (1-72) on my HD TV/HD Set Top box combo, I am automatically given the HD version of the station rather than having to find it somewhere in the 500's, the ranges of channels reserved for HD stations on Rogers.
So tuning into Channel 7 will now bring me HD City-tv. I don't think this works with the specialty channels though (e.g. tuning in Channel 26 still gets me the SD version of TSN...the only HD version is still found on channel 506)
In conjunction with that change, I also noticed they started using a different Interactive Program Guide (IPG) when you go into the Guide, Info or Record options of the HD Set Top Box...they changed the font type used.
Also as of today (November 29), the station that was formerly know as STAR had become the Canadian version of E! Television. Not even 2 years ago, a number of local stations across Canada were branded as E! Television but that experiment didn't work and they were changed back to local stations soon after under new local ownership (Global TV sold the stations).
You can catch the channel, in glorious old-fashioned SD only now, on Channel 63 on Rogers Cable TV in Toronto (and Channel 71 in Richmond Hill/Thornhill)!

Sad News on the Passing of Canadian-born actor Leslie Nielsen
Canadian-born actor, Leslie Nielsen died earlier today (November 28) at the age of 84 in Florida from complications of pneumonia.
Although his acting career started out with him in more serious dramatic roles, he became best known for the comic roles he took on later in his career, such as the Doctor in the 1980 movie Airplane and as Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad TV series and later The Naked Gun movie franchise.
Initially the comic roles played off Nielsen's established serious acting persona as he delivered his lines with a deadpan approach. As he became more known for humorous roles, the performances did evolve into a lighter, more "bumbling fool" type of delivery.
Leslie Nielsen grew up in Canada, primarily in the far north regions of the country, before establishing his acting career in the U.S. His late brother, Erik was a Conservative MP during the time that Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister of Canada.
As a tribute, here is the famous scene from Airplane that established Nielsen as comic actor:

Retro...like it's 1861!
The NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets team will unveil their new "third jersey" later today (November 26, 2010) during their game against the Detroit Red Wings
Here is what they look like:
The overall look of the jersey gives off a retro vibe. The inspiration for the colours and logo along with the team's name (Blue Jackets) is the geographical area's association with the U.S. Civil War back in the 1860's.
The initials of the team's founder, John H. McConnell are sewn into the back neck collar. These initials will only be found on this season's jersey to commemorate the team's 10th season in the NHL.
The 10th anniversery of the Blue Jackets team is also saluted on the jersey inside the collar, where the team's slogan "We Fight...We March!" along with 10 stars is found sewn in
Do you have any thoughts on this jersey? There will be a number of other third or commemorative jerseys also being released by NHL teams this season. What do you think of this trend? Let us know!

The Bus Does Not Stop Here Anymore
Literally!
Recently, a piece of roadway in Downtown Toronto known as the "Dufferin Jog" was replaced with a multi-million dollar underpass which essentially allows traffic to drive straight through rather than use the "jog", which was a multi-street detour for drivers to get around overhead train tracks and return to Dufferin Street.
Some bus riders didn't get the news that as a result of the opening of the underpass, the bus stop they used for years now ceases to exist because it was on the former detour route! Officials do claim that notices were posted on the affected stops indicating they would be out of service once the underpass opened and the bus route re-routed (say that 10 times fast).
Some riders continued to line up at the stop after the new underpass opened but were unaware the route had been altered.
One frustrated bus commuter was overheard saying..."I'll wait another 10 minutes...but that's it!"

The bio of the World Famous DJ Joe D!
By popular demand:
DJ Joe D can be heard each and every Sunday @ 10AM Eastern (3PM GMT in the UK) on Crazy Radio.
DJ Joe D is a child of the 1970′s and 1980′s and grew up being influenced by the distinct sounds of Top 40 Radio and FM Radio in North America during this era.
Originally from Toronto, Ontario Canada, DJ Joe D was fortunate enough to be exposed to both the big city sounds of the local stations and to the sounds of the border U.S. radio stations.
During the era, the biggest musical influences and trends included standard pop/rock content, the arrival and departure of Disco, European alternative/new wave influences, and those musical sounds uniquely Canadian amongst others. It was truly a transitional time in music and radio; this is noted in the variety of songs on the playlists you hear each week on the DJ Joe D Show.
“Being able to do my own weekly show in the style of those radio stations of the past, full of the music and features I grew up listening to, is a dream come true. I am truly having fun with the show week after week!”
Along with the songs of the 1970′s and 1980′s, DJ Joe D throws in just the right mix of those songs from today, the 1990′s and even the 1960′s for good measure. ”The show is North American in sound…I try each week to share with listeners around the world that unique experience…attempting to help them understand what has influenced me in putting the show together!”
Every week is something different when you tune it the DJ Joe D show–whether it’s the regular format show or a special theme show!
Each week is an evolution in the development of the DJ Joe D Show as the ultimate hour to spend with us on a Sunday! Please join DJ Joe D and the rest of his crew each week!

Share your Black Friday Experiences!
Although today is Thanksgiving Day in the USA, people there are prepping for the big event starting tomorrow (Friday November 26, 2010)....Black Friday! This is the official kickoff to the U.S. Christmas sales season and is the single busiest day for shopping!
Major retailers expect a brisk business, with many notable ones swinging open their doors tomorrow between 3AM and 5AM (that's right folks...I indicated AM!).
Prices are slashed down to bring people in the door. There are dozens of websites that have detailed all the bargains and even have copies of the retailers flyers! Many retailers are starting the frenzy today online!
Here at the DJ Joe D blog and the DJ Joe D Show we are interested in hearing about your Black Friday experiences...are you heading out early this year...what is on your list...what did you find once you got to a store or two...how were the crowds...anything associated with Black Friday!
Over the next few days...we ask that you leave us any comments re: you Black Friday plans or experiences this year.
We also want to hear from you if you have something to share about what you encountered on Black Friday in years' past. Last year, for example, the DJ Joe D family experienced it's one and only Black Friday...there were lots of line-ups and crowds, but we managed to pickup a few things we had our eyes on...at incredible prices too!
While the Black Friday experience is typically for those who live in the U.S., there are many people who cross the border from Canada to participate or who may be in the USA during this shopping frenzy. Let's hear from you to!
Leave any comments in the comments section...some of them we will share live on the air this upcoming Sunday (November 28) on the DJ Joe D Show

NFL on Turkey Day!
As heard on the November 21, 2010 NFL Minute with Jonah...here is how the 3 Turkey Day matchups look (aka U.S. Thanksgiving Day NFL games on Thursday November 25):
New England @ Detroit
"New England on top...Detroit just plays poorly!"
Game Update--November 25:
As Jonah predicted--New England took this one 45-24! Detroit actually had some leads during the game!
New Orleans @ Dallas
"The defending Super Bowl champs New Orleans should win this one...Dallas struggling!"
Game Update--November 25:
New Orleans gets this one...but they were the struggling team in the 2nd half...Dallas almost stole it!
Cincinnati @ New York Jets
"New York Jets win at home...defense should do it for them!"
Game Update--November 25:
Easy one for the Jets...26-10--Defense didn't have to do much...Good Work Jonah-3 for 3!

Why not bring in The Broad Street Bullies themselves to do the work?
Here is some not so spectacular video of the start of the "demolition" of The Spectrum in Philadephia (November 23, 2010)...known as the 1970's, 1980's and early 1990's home of hockey's "Broad Street Bullies", the Philadelphia Flyers and the NBA's 76ers...so a few championships have been won and lost in this building!
For some reason they are simply using a wrecking ball on the building, only taking out small chunks of the ediface with each swing. With a building that size, you would think they would start out with some big stuff to knock it down all at once??? That is the premise of the video which was entitled "The Lamest Building Demolition!"
In actual fact, the full demolition is expected to take about four months, and in its place will be a complex that, when finished, will consist of bars, restaurants and hotels.
Today's demolition start was kicked off with a brief ceremony in the parking lot where about 1,000 fans descended on the South Philadelphia sports complex starting at 8 a.m., about 4-1/2 hours before the first hole was punched into the 44-year-old building.

Well Done Vaughan Rangers Bantam Select Red Team!
Another tournament...another fine effort from the team!
It was a fun weekend this past one as the players from the Vaughan Rangers Bantam Select Team played at peak levels to become finalists in their home tournament, The Marshall Drewnowsky Memorial Select Tournament.
In the end, the team missed out on the championship but still brought home hardware for the second tournament in a row. And since it was our home tournament, it only took 10 minutes to get home as opposed to the 6 hour drive home after our last one!
Thanks again to the players, coaches, management and parents of the Vaughan Rangers Bantam Select Team...now we focus on the big prize...league championships!

Toronto Maple Leafs as a topic on a U.K. TV game show
This is a clip from a U.K. TV game show, Mastermind.
The contestant is obviously a Canadian and a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. I'm sure almost all the people watching and the host had no clue about the answers to the questions being asked here!

So what happens if you hit the brick wall?
The above is a picture of Wrigley Field in Chicago. The baseball shrine, known as the home of the NL's Chicago Cubs is being used this weekend to host a U.S. College Football game.
However, when the field was finally prepped for the football game, it was discovered that the eastern side end-zone (on right side of picture) abuts a solid brick wall (think the famous ivy covered outfield wall during the baseball season)!
To avoid serious injury due to the lack of room in that end-zone...the NCAA, for this game only, will essentially change the rules to "switch sides" for all possessions, meaning all scoring drives, by either team, will move toward and occur in the western side end-zone!
For those fans who bought tickets in the eastern side end-zone, all is not lost...all kickoffs by either team will be made into that end-zone before the sides are changed for offensive possessions. Those fans may end up with a souvenir!

This is the first in a series of postings I will be calling "A Play In Four Lines."
Today's presentation is called "Back on The Bandwagon Again:"
Setting: Any office in the GTA on November 17, 2010
A couple of office workers are standing around the watercooler as we begin:
Worker A: Hey, did you know the Leafs won last night
Worker B: I heard that on the news this morning! I've already booked the day off
Worker A: What day...what are you talking about???
Worker B: That day sometime in June...when the Stanley Cup Parade will come through Toronto!
Curtain Falls---Play is over!
Stay tuned for some additional plays in this series. Some ripped from today's headlines!

Former Toronto Blue Jays' Ace Pitcher Roy "Doc" Halladay Wins the 2010 NL Cy Young Award!
Roy Halladay was the unanimous choice in his win of the 2010 NL Cy Young Award on Tuesday (Nov. 16). He became the fifth pitcher to earn the honour in both leagues.
Halladay received all 32 first-place votes in results released by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He became the 13th pitcher to unanimously win the NL Cy Young.
The pitcher nicknamed “Doc” added to the 2003 AL Cy Young he won with the Blue Jays. He joined Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Gaylord Perry as pitchers to earn the award in both leagues.
The Philadelphia Phillies ace was an easy choice after leading the NL with 21 wins and topping the majors in innings, shutouts and complete games.
Acquired by the Phillies from Toronto last December and immediately given a US$60-million, three-year contract extension, Halladay met or exceeded every expectation of him in his first season away from the Blue Jays.
Halladay threw a perfect game at Florida on May 29, then tossed a no-hitter against Cincinnati in his playoff debut in October.
Halladay went 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA and 219 strikeouts in his first season in the NL. He had nine complete games and four shutouts.
Halladay is the 16th multiple winner of a Cy Young Award; he was also the seventh Phillies pitcher to win the award.
The Cy Young Award, recognizing the best pitcher of the season in each league, started in 1956 with a single award given for all of MLB regardless of league. It started being awarded to the best pitcher in each league beginnng in the 1967 season.
UPDATE--November 18, 2010
Felix Hernandez of Seattle Mariners wins AL Cy Young Award
Hernandez captured his first career Cy Young Award, beating out Tampa Bay's David Price and New York Yankee's starter CC Sabathia for the honor in a vote by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Apple's Big November 16, 2010 Announcement
The Beatles and their record label, EMI/Apple Corps, have finally made a deal with Apple Inc. to put its music on iTunes, ending years of feuding.
Apple made the announcement today (Nov. 16); on its web site yesterday (Nov. 15), it displayed a full-screen photo of The Beatles, circa 1969 with the message: ”Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.”
Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple indicated, “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes 10 years ago!"
Selected items from the Beatles cataglogue would be made available immediately on iTunes including their 13 recently remastered studio albums along with a special digital “Beatles Box Set,” and the “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964″ concert film, according to Apple, EMI Records and the Beatles’ Apple Corps.
“We’re really excited to bring the Beatles’ music to iTunes,” ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney said in a statement.
The albums will sell for $12.99 each; double albums will cost $19.99 to download and individual songs will cost $1.29 each, a premium over the average cost of 99 cents per song. (Prices may differ slightly in Canada)

Girl Talk's Newest Has Just Dropped--All Day
Girl Talk (aka Greg Gillis) is from Pittsburgh who has made a career out of being the single greatest sampler in the history of electronic music.
He has received this recognition by mixing his samples using only a laptop. Mashups are the biggest thing now...and Girl Talk is known as the biggest name by far putting together these compilations
He mashes up artists you wouldn't normally associate with one another (i.e., the Notorious B.I.G. next to Journey, Metallica up against Hall & Oates). Every song sounds like a hit because they're all nothing but already-familiar samples.
All Day has a ton of huge high-profile samples; just on the first track alone...Black Sabbath, Jay-Z, Eminem, Jane's Addiction, the Ramones, the Doors and Missy Elliott!
Here is a clip from one of the tracks on All Day...On and On:
Here is one of the alternative links to download the full All Day recording...his site, obviously today is seeing a lot of traffic, so these alternative download sites have appeared:

Fatboy Slim...move over. This is a lot of fun!
Just be warned...there is a lot of objectionable language and content in these songs...so if you are sensitive to that sort of stuff, you may want to avoid this!
Here is the Wiki entry on Girl Talk if you are interested in learning more about him and his previous albums:

NEW--here is a link that will take you to a player that plays all the tracks on All Day and gives you the titles of the samples used as they are played

He has received this recognition by mixing his samples using only a laptop. Mashups are the biggest thing now...and Girl Talk is known as the biggest name by far putting together these compilations

Was this a celebration for the first win of the year for the Buffalo Bills (Source: WGRZ Buffalo):
Deer ran through the Wegmans on Military Road in Niagara Falls Sunday morning leaving customers and management in disbelief.
Just after 9 a.m. the deer entered the automatic doors of the Wegman's store and chased each other through the produce section and around the store.
The deer made a considerarble mess inside the Wegmans store

Once Upon a Time in Canada
As heard on the DJ Joe D Show, Sunday November 14, 2010
Once upon a time in Canada, we only had a handful of television stations to choose from. Of course, NHL hockey was the television sport of choice for many Canadians during the long, dark and cold winter months.
The CBC, or the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, was the place Canadians went for NHL hockey, especially on a Saturday night and during the playoffs. Everyone in Canada could get the CBC on their TV and all the hockey shown was free.
Over a number of years, cable television spawned many more TV stations, including specialized sports channels that needed a big sport to fill the time in between shows about dart competitions and poker.
NHL Hockey was that sport and then the CBC had to compete against these specialized sport channels for both regular season and playoff games…especially since many Canadians have cable TV
Fast forward to today…now those specialized cable TV channels compete amongst themselves to bring you more NHL hockey. And you can pay lots of money to get all the NHL games through the specialty sports packages offered.
The CBC is still there, but doesn’t rule the playing surface any more and must compete to get the marquee games and playoff series each season. Once a sports leader in Canada, it has slowly evolved into just another choice of the many available.

Down Goes Brown!
I always liked this clip...Joe Bowen, Leafs radio announcer at the time, calling a fight between Rob Brown of the Chicago Blackhawks and Sylvain Lefebvre of the Toronto Maple Leafs back from Dec. 1992.
Oft quoted line from this clip lives on. The first fight on the clip also has a couple of notable hockey pugilists too!

Could there be a new addition to the cast of Mad Men next season?
The smash hit series on AMC, Mad Men may be adding some younger cast members next season!
Producers of the show, now set in the mid 1960's and the world of the New York City advertising industry, have begun to recognize as the show's timeline begins to move closer to the late 1960's and the "love and peace" generation characterized by the times, it needs to appeal to a younger demographic.
With that in mind, the actor below may be added to the season 5 cast...stay tuned for more!

Today...November 11...is Remembrance Day in Canada
Please take a minute or two this morning at 11am to remember the contribution Canadian military personnel have made over the years to provide all Canadians with the freedoms and standard of life we all enjoy today.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service.
It isn't a national holiday across Canada, but employees in federally regulated employees do get the day off.
