Hype and the Big Moment in North American Sports

As heard on the DJ Joe D Show on Sunday November 7, 2010:

There are those moments in North American professional sports that fans, the media and even team management build up to be the “must see” experience.

First off, by telling you it’s going to be the “must see” experience rather than letting you experience it yourself is usually suspect…but when those experiences are essentially a bust…a “fail” experience instead, that is what history seems to remember.

A couple of weeks ago, the Miami Heat of the NBA played their first game of the 2010/2011 season with their new hyped super combo of Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade.

Instead of blowing the competition out of the building, as hyped for many weeks leading to up this game, they lost to the Boston Celtics, who have some star power but weren’t hyped as much as the Heat combo was.

Other notable “must see” but “bust” moments have included:

  • The famous David Beckham coming to play for LA Galaxy team in the North American MLS league and basically not even making a blip on the North American professional sports radar

  • The recent return of Tiger Woods to the professional golfing circuit…he wasn’t even close to the leaderboard in any of the notable tournaments he has played in since the sordid events in his life began to unfold almost one year ago!

  • Basketball superstar Michael Jordan abruptly quitting basketball during the mid 1990’s to move to Major League Baseball. Let’s just say once he got to the MLB, the most memorable part of that career was his return to basketball a few years later!

There are many, many more moments we could list! In reality, many of the “must see” moments are hyped as the next big thing…they usually turn out to be big busts instead.

Now only if the DJ Joe D Show could get that sort of hype!
