Local Boy Joey Votto Named 2010 National League MVP

Cincinnati Red's Joey Votto of Etobicoke, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, was named today 2010 National League MVP in Major League Baseball (MLB), in a near unanimous vote over the St. Louis Cardinals' All Star, Albert Pujols.

Votto becomes only the third Canadian-born player in MLB history to receive the MVP award in either league.  Larry Walker won a National League MVP award in 1997; Justin Morneau won the American League MVP in 2006.

The first baseman received 31 of the 32 first-place votes

Votto batted .324 with 37 homers, 113 RBIs and 106 runs scored in leading the Reds to their first NL Central title since 1995.




UPDATE--November 23, 2010

Josh Hamilton, of the Texas Rangers was named 2010 MVP for the American League.  He beat out Miguel Cabrera for the honour

Hamilton led the majors in batting average (.359) He had 32 homers and 100 RBIs despite missing time with two broken ribs.
